Projectiles and 2-D Motion
1) A
soccer ball is kicked from the ground at 18 m/s, 15° above the horizontal. How
far will it go?
2) Kick a
different soccer ball, this time at 35 m/s, 21° above the horizontal. How high
will it go?
3) As an experiment,
you throw a television off a cliff 7.5 m high. If the TV leaves the cliff with
a velocity of 5.5 m/s, with no vertical component, (a) how far from the base of
the cliff will it land, and (b) what will be its velocity (not its speed) when it lands?
4) You
decide to shoot a red, plastic rocket down the hall. The rocket leaves the
ground at 24 m/s, and the height of the ceiling is 3.5 m. What is the smallest
angle that will cause the rocket to hit the ceiling?
5) During
a tennis match, one player fires off a serve at 40.0 m/s. The ball leaves the
racket 2.35 m above the court surface, traveling horizontally, and passes over
the net 12.0 m away. If the height of the net is 0.90 m, by how much does the
ball clear the net?
6) A cow
is running to the west at 2.4 m/s. It accelerates 30° south of west at 0.85 m/s2
for 12 seconds. What is the cow’s new velocity?
7) If a
runner jogs 4.0 km 25° east of north, then 2.5 km 40° north of east, then 0.85
km due east, what is his displacement?
8) A
river flows at 1.5 m/s, due north. A swimmer swims across with a velocity of
2.0 m/s, 25° west of north, with respect to the river. If the river is 11 m
wide, how much time will it take her to cross the river?
9) A boat
is moving across a lake at 4.5 m/s, 30° west of south, with respect to the
shore. A person on the boat is walking along the deck. The boat is moving at
1.9 m/s, 25° east of north, with respect to the person. What is the velocity of
the person with respect to the shore?
